Canon vs. Nikon

And so many brands in between!

Canon vs. Nikon

Often times in conversation at a shoot, I am asked why I shoot on the camera that I do. This article is all about my preference between the brands Canon and Nikon!

The Great Debate

If you are to look into online photography groups, open forums, and chatrooms, the question always stands. Canon or Nikon and why?! Like any other brand rivalry, you have the people who get technical, the people who go with the flow, the people who are die-hard, blind followers of a brand they think is better, simply because the use it and don't know any better, and the people like me, who really just prefer one over the other with no clear explanation other than, "they like it."

So Which Are You?!

There are many more brands other than just Canon or Nikon. Lumix, Pentax, Sony, the list goes on. Everyone has their "thing," but me, I'm a Canon girl! I learned on an entry level Canon, a crop-sensor, Rebel T5i. I recently made the jump to a full frame camera and could not possibly be more excited that I've added a Canon 6D to my camera "collection."

Why Did You Start With The T5i?

To be truthfully honest, when I started my search for a camera, I had a deal with my mom. She would match what I put down for a DSLR camera. I knew nothing about them other than:

A) I wanted one SO BAD

B) I wanted a lot of stuff (whoo… T5i kit bundle!)

C) I wanted one SOON. Like right at that moment.

With it's price point, the kit I purchased, and the amount of time I could get it in, the Canon family captured me! Young Sidney was thrilled!

When Did You Upgrade?

I built a business on my T5i, I took the time to learn what I thought it could teach me before I decided to make a commitment to a "big girl" camera. So just this past March I upgraded to a Canon 6D, my first full frame DSLR! To be completely honest, I sort of settled for the 6D. I wanted a Canon 5D Mark III or IV in the worst way. But after LOTS of research, plenty of lengthy conversations with my husband, and Canon discontinuing the 5D Mark III and quite the price jump to a Mark IV, I hit "purchase," on the 6D sitting in my online cart!

Let me tell you, I am not sorry AT ALL about my purchase. It is a beast of a camera and has been my workhorse ever since! I will stick up for this camera until my dying day because I am so impressed with it. I felt like it was time to upgrade from my first camera, and I feel that I made the right choice for me!

So You Stuck With Canon!

I did! It's the brand that built me. I have shot with a Nikon and know plenty of people who do! They create beautiful images and I truly believe it is who is behind the camera, not the camera itself. With different people, come different opinions and preferences. So while I have shot with a Nikon, it just didn't feel as "friendly" in my hands, nothing was in the same place, and as much as I tried to mess with it, it just wasn't the same. But I have a lot of respect for people who shoot with them, because they confuse the heck out of me and I've never even tried another brand. But I am so happy with what I'm learning about the Canon family, and will most likely stick with them forever!
